Background and objective. The nose as the first segment of the upper respiratory tract is exposed to different climatic conditions of the hot and humid air. The purpose of this study was to determine the basic conditions which lead to warming of the nasal mucosa. In detail the influence of exposure time, inspiration air humidity, exposure temperature and thermal energy was to be under examination. Patients and Methods. 21 healthy volunteers were enclosed into the study. The volunteers were breathing conditioned air, out of a climate chamber via a flexible tube and respiratory mask. Temperature data was recorded on three days. Each day was associated with a different humidity, 25%, 50% or 75%. Temperature was increasing respectively after 20 minutes from 37°C to 65°C and finally 75°C. A thermocouple was used for detection of the temperature at the nasal septum in Area 2 according to Cottle after 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 20 minutes and the 5 minutes recreation stage. Nasal mucosa temperature was rising within the first two to 5 minutes. Longer inhalation time lead to no more significant temperature increase. Higher humidity values lead to no significant changes of nasal mucosa. Higher temperature of the inspired air resulted in all terms of exposure in higher nasal mucosa temperature. The nasal mucosa temperature was directly depended on the thermal energy of the inspired air. High thermal energy values resulted in a high nasal mucosa temperature. Conclusions. The results show that the nasal mucosa temperature can be increased after only a short inhalation period. A temperature range with no further increase is reached quickly. Rising of temperature is more important than increasing humidity.
