Resorbable- versus titanium implants for the treatment of mandibular angle fractures - a comparison of the stability in a biomechanical in vitro examination.
Background:
The use of semi rigid titanium systems for the treatment of mandibular angle fractures becomes more and more clinical routine. Mostly low profile miniplates (2.0 mm, 1.5 mm) are used for the internal fixation. This investigation should show if resorbable miniplates may be able to provide the same stability as titanium plates.
Material and methods:
In the present study a biomechanical in vitro model (mandibular strain simulator) is used to examine the stability of different resorbable and titanium plates used for the fixation of a mandibular angle fracture in an artificial mandible (synbone). Three titanium systems (Synthes 2.0, 1.5 and 1.3) and four resorbable systems (Inion CPS 2.5 and 1.5, Lactosorb 2.0, MacroSorb 1.5) have been tested.
Results:
There have been only small differences between the resorbable and the titanium fixation systems. The Synthes 2.0 titanium plating system has shown the biggest Stability of all systems, followed by Inion 2.5, Lactosorb 2.0, MacroSorb 1.5, Inion 1.5 and Synthes 1.5 and 1.3.
Conclusion:
In terms of stability of the fixation, the plate-screw-compound and their specific mechanical characteristics, resorbable miniplates provide nearly the same stability as titanium miniplates.
To reach an equal stability as a titanium miniplate, a slightly bigger resorbable plating system should be used.
