AbstractBackground and aim: In-patient rehabilitation programs are well integrated in the comprehensive therapeutic concept of oncologic diseases in Germany. Several investigation have already shown the benefit of such programs concerning quality of life. On the other hand was evident in some of these studies that quality of life decreased again some months after the rehabilitation measure. Therefore this study was performed to analyse if the positive results of a oncological in-patient rehabilitation could be stabilized or even further improved by a step-by-step rehabilitation program. This special program was compared with a conventional rehabilitation program regarding short- and long-term effects on quality of life among women with breast cancer. The following two hypotheses had to be analysed: 1. Quality of life improves significantly in all patients during an in-patient rehabilitation program of some weeks duration. 2. Patients taking part in the step-by-step program will show further improvement of quality of life in the following time up to one year. Besides this the course of anxiety and depression as well as of pain was investigated. Conclusions: The study at hand proved that the analysed step-by-step rehablitation program provides significant advantages concerning quality of life and depression in the treatment of specific patients with breast cancer, although it seems not bo be superior in general about a conventional rehabilitation program. It also became evident that for better differentiation of patients who might profit from a four week sojourn of the step-by-step program further investigation should be performed with the aim to identify further parameters that will allow such a classification before the rehabilitation begins.dc.description.abstract
