Quantum effects in biological systems

Quantum biology is a thriving field of research that requires from constant theoretical impulse to be able to keep the pace of the experimental observations. In this thesis, the tools from the theory of open quantum systems are applied in an effort to understand the behaviour and propose new insights for two such biological systems. The interest lies not only in the possibility that quantum effects are beneficial, or even essential for life processes, but also in the extent to which the field unites several different research domains in an interdisciplinary exercise that could prove revolutionary, both in pure biology and on the technological applications it might lead to.
