In the last years, the prevalence of obesity and its concomitant diseases, such as colorectal cancers, have increased dramatically worldwide. The underlying causes thereof are only speculative. In addition to other factors, cancer may be potentiated by underlying inflammation resultant from an imbalance in pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and adipocytokines. This dissertation addressed the potential effect of visceral adipose tissue as an endocrine organ, favoring altering adipocytokine levels in obese patients, and promoting colorectal cancer genesis. The study collective under investigation consisted of 38 obese patients and 46 patients with history of colorectal cancer. Gene expression analyses of Chemokine CXC Motif Ligand 5 (CXCL5), Chemokine CC Motif Ligand 15 (CCL15) and Chemokine CC Motif Ligand 20 (CCL20) were performed using visceral adipose tissue from both collectives. Comparative analysis of serum levels of high-molecular-weight adiponectin, and analysis of baseline data was also performed. Differences were detected with respect to baseline data, blood serum expression of high-molecular-weight adiponectin, and routine parameters for monitoring glucose, lipid and liver metabolism, as well as inflammation. In contrast, however, both collectives showed comparable expression for CXCL5, CCL15 and CCL20 in visceral adipose tissue. These findings imply a potential deleterious effect for cytokines in the development of obesity associated Colorectal Cancer genesis.
