The ß-hemolysin of Streptococcus agalactiae is encoded by the cyl-operon. While the CovS/CovR regulator supresses ß-hemolysis, it is unknown, if additional regulatory mechanisms exist. To analyze regulation of ß-hemolysis, a promoter region fragment of the cyl genes that can cause a prominent hyperhemolytic phenotype of S. agalactiae was further characterized. By targeted mutagenesis, we identified several short DNA sequences harboring putative repressor molecule binding sites.
