AbstractThis paper presents the procedural and clinical results of carotid artery stenting in a retrospective monocenter study in 99 high risk patients (according to the SAPPHIRE criteria) with a mean age of 74 years. The pre-interventional grade of carotid stenosis of at least 70 % could be reduced in 86 out of 99 patients (86.9 %) to 20 % or less and in 12 out of 99 patients (12.1 %) to 50 % or less. The MACE rate (combination of death, stroke and myocardial infarction) after 30 days was 0 % in asymptomatic patients, 2.7 % (2 out of 74 patients) in symptomatic patients and 2.0 % (2 out of 99 patients) in the whole study collective. Thus, in experienced centers carotid artery stenting can produce good results even in high risk patients.dc.description.abstract
