The "dumbbell variant" of the Müller-Lyer illusion is investigated. The perceived size of a line is determined as a function of the framing ratio FR. From a model, a mathematical expression is derived which takes into account three effects. (1) Assimilation is described by a proportionality term. (2) It is assumed that assimilation decreases exponentially. (3) The contrast effect is interpreted as due to size constancy and taken into account by a power term. From a fit, the size constancy parameter is determined.
