Physicochemical properties and synthesis of oligothiophene macrocycles

Fully conjugated macrocycles based on oligothienyl monomers constitute a new class of materials with exciting prospects: Since they do not possess end groups that interfere with the pi system of the conjugated chain, like it is possible for oligo- and polymers, they might be considered “idealised polymers”. Their cyclic nature furthermore defines intriguing new electronic properties different to linear oligomers, and their tendency to self-assemble on ordered surfaces is a good basis for an application in molecular electronics. The work presented in this thesis can be divided into three main parts: First, the synthesis of a new, aryl-substituted oligothiophene macrocycle by using the so-called “metal template” strategy. Second, the physicochemical characterisation of oligothiophene macrocycles with different monomer units, especially by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as by electrochemistry. And finally, evaluation of the molecular recognition capabilities for these macrocycles in solution.
